Basis of the edition

The present edition is based on the photographs available at the Mainzer Photoarchiv of the Hethitologie Portal Mainz, as well as the available hand-copies and relevant secondary literature up to 2019. When the original manuscripts have been collated, this is noted in the commentary.

Commentary

This fragment preserves festival descriptions, following the usual pattern. The gods attested in paragraph 4 remind closely of those of KBo 70.109+ // KUB 38.6+. Note in particular the Storm god of the Countryside, who is attested in these two compositions only, Piḫami (assuming the restoration in line i 14′ is correct), otherwise attested in KBo 70.109+ // KUB 38.6+ and in KBo 2.16 only, and finally Putallimi and Pentaruḫši.

Palaeography and orthography: Note the unusual variant of LÚ (HZL no. 78/13, with two inscribed verticals) and the use of LIŠ for /li/ (i 13′).

i 11′: The reading of the name of the festival is very uncertain; the sign looks like ḪU, RI, or NUN, but does not correspond exactly to any of these.

i 13′: A reading [Dḫu-wa-at-t]a-ši-iš would fit the traces and the context, but is too long for the space available in the gap.

i 14′: The tentative restoration of the DN Piḫami is based on the observation that KUB 51.7 has in common with KBo 70.109+ // KUB 38.6+ a peculiar melange of gods, including the Storm god of the Countryside, Pentaruḫši, and Putallimi; Piḫami is attested in several paragraphs of KBo 70.109+ // KUB 38.6+. The last DN may perhaps be DGE6 (as assumed by Miller 2004: 389 fn. 619, but correct there the reference to “Purilismi,” which belongs to Putallimi), or a deity whose name begins by mi-. Note that DGE6 seems to be attested in KBo 2.8 only.
